Energy Trader (Quantitative/Spot)

Job Description: Energy Trader (Quantitative or Spot Trading)

About the Role

Join a market-leading energy trading desk managing a diverse portfolio of solar, wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and firming assets across the National Electricity Market (NEM). We are seeking talented Energy Traders to join our dynamic team in either a Quantitative Trading or Spot Trading capacity—or ideally, candidates who can bridge both disciplines.

Whether your strength lies in real-time market execution and asset dispatch, or in developing sophisticated analytical models and algorithms, we want to hear from you. Exceptional candidates with experience spanning both areas will be highly valued as we build out our expanding trading desk.

Location: Australia (flexible on state)

Reporting to: GM Trading/Analytics

Key Responsibilities

Depending on your background and strengths, your role will focus on one or more of the following areas:

Spot Trading & Market Operations

• Execute real-time trades in the electricity spot market (AEMO NEM), focusing on BESS, solar, wind, and gas-fired generation assets

• Optimize battery energy storage systems (BESS) dispatch to capture arbitrage opportunities, FCAS revenue, and grid stability services

• Monitor market conditions, weather forecasts, renewable generation forecasts, and asset performance to identify trading opportunities

• Manage and optimize short-term power and gas positions within established risk limits

• Collaborate with asset operations teams to coordinate real-time dispatch and ensure compliance with market rules

• Respond rapidly to market events, price volatility, and system constraints (e.g., MLF changes, network congestion)

• Execute trades across spot, short-term forward, and ancillary services markets

Quantitative Analysis & Modelling

• Develop, implement, and maintain Python-based quantitative models for BESS optimization, price forecasting, and risk analytics

• Build and calibrate statistical models for NEM wholesale price forecasting, incorporating supply-demand fundamentals, weather patterns, and renewable generation forecasts

• Design and optimize BESS charge-discharge schedules using advanced algorithms that account for round-trip efficiency, degradation, and market price spreads

• Conduct scenario analysis, stress testing, and sensitivity analysis to assess portfolio risk under various market conditions

• Develop data pipelines, dashboards, and reporting tools to support real-time trading decisions and post-trade P&L attribution

• Perform back-testing and validation of trading strategies, iteratively improving model performance based on market outcomes

• Collaborate with Risk and Commercial teams to enhance risk management frameworks and pricing models

• Translate complex quantitative insights into actionable trading strategies for the broader team

Continuous Improvement & Collaboration

• Contribute to continuous improvement of trading tools, processes, and analytical frameworks

• Mentor junior traders and analysts on market fundamentals, BESS economics, and quantitative methodologies

• Work closely with engineers, data scientists, and portfolio managers to integrate technical and commercial insights

• Stay abreast of NEM rule changes, regulatory developments, and technological advancements in BESS and renewable energy

What We're Looking For

We welcome applications from candidates with strong backgrounds in either Spot Trading OR Quantitative Trading, as well as those who possess hybrid experience across both disciplines.

For Spot Trading Candidates:

• Hands-on experience optimizing BESS, solar, wind, or gas assets in the Australian NEM

• Deep understanding of NEM spot pricing, FCAS markets, MLF/DLF, bidding strategies, and market dispatch

• Proven ability to make fast, informed decisions under pressure in volatile market conditions

• Strong understanding of BESS technologies (lithium-ion, grid-forming capabilities, state of charge management, degradation)

• Experience with renewable energy asset operations and their integration into wholesale markets

• Familiarity with market rules, compliance frameworks, and regulatory requirements

For Quantitative Trading Candidates:

• 3+ years of experience in energy market modelling, quantitative analysis, or data science applied to energy markets

• Strong proficiency in Python for data analysis, modelling, and automation (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, matplotlib)

• Experience building statistical models for price forecasting, BESS optimization, or portfolio risk analytics

• Understanding of Australian NEM fundamentals and wholesale electricity market dynamics

• Demonstrated ability to translate complex analytical insights into practical trading strategies

• Experience with large datasets, data pipelines, and visualization tools (PowerBI, Tableau, or equivalent)

• Background in energy market consultancy, research, or quantitative finance

Highly Regarded (for All Candidates):

• Hybrid experience spanning both spot trading execution and quantitative modelling

• Knowledge of PLEXOS, market simulation tools, or optimization algorithms

• Understanding of derivatives, hedging strategies, and risk management in energy markets

• Exposure to FCAS market bidding and optimization

• Familiarity with demand forecasting, weather analytics, or renewable generation forecasting

• CFA, FRM, or equivalent quantitative finance certifications

• Graduate degree in Engineering (Renewable Energy, Chemical, Electrical), Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Finance, or related quantitative discipline

Personal Attributes

• Collaborative mindset and strong communication skills (ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders)
