Job Description: HPHT Well Engineering Specialist
Location: Malaysia
Start Date: 16 March 2026
Position Overview
The HPHT Well Engineering Specialist will serve as the primary technical expert responsible for conducting Independent Engineering Reviews of the High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) wells. This role requires deep expertise in well design, drilling operations, and HPHT engineering. The Specialist will review the complete engineering design package for each HPHT well and deliver a comprehensive evaluation.
The role also includes delivering an HPHT Well Engineering training course, supporting with post-review technical clarifications. Position is in Kuala Lumpur or offshore locations on a call-out basis.
Conduct a full, independent engineering review of COMPANY’s HPHT wells, covering all aspects of well engineering design, including:
Plug and Abandonment (P&A) planning review
End-to-end verification of well engineering assumptions, design margins, and operational readiness
The engineering review report shall include, but not be limited to, detailed assessment and recommendations on:
Casing Setting Depth and Kick Tolerance
Casing and Tubing Stress Analysis
Casing and Tubing Grade & Metallurgy Selection
Drilling Torque & Drag and Hydraulics Simulations
Casing Running Simulations
Drilling Fluids Recommendations
Cementing Simulations & Recommendations, including MPC if required
MPD Simulations & Recommendations (if applicable)
Dynamic Kill Simulations
Risk Assessment (Design & Operational)
Well Testing Design & Plan
Plug & Abandonment (P&A) Plan
Core Technical Competencies
A. HPHT Well Design & Verification
HPHT basis of design, pore/fracture pressure envelope, margins, and design factor selection
Casing setting depth selection & kick tolerance calculations
Casing & tubing stress analysis (Collapse/Burst/Tension/VME, thermal, effects)
Metallurgy selection (CRA/Martensitic/13Cr/25Cr/Inconel), sour service compliance (NACE MR0175/ISO 15156)
Wellhead & tubing hanger load cases and integrity envelopes
Fluid windows, ECD management, surge/swab assessments
B. Dynamic Modelling & Simulations
Torque & drag modelling; buckling, helical/sinusoidal thresholds
Hydraulics (ECD prediction, cuttings transport, hole cleaning, gel effects at HPHT)
Casing running simulations (loads, overpull, float equipment)
Cementing simulations (displacement efficiency, contamination, thermal effects, HPHT spacer design; MPC as required)
MPD modelling & feasibility (Pressurized Mudcap, CBHP, DAPC), choke response and transients
C. Operational Engineering
Drilling fluids for HPHT (oil/synthetic base, rheology at temp/pressure, barite sag mitigation, gas solubility)
Well testing (DST/TST) design: downhole equipment selection, barriers, pressure/temperature envelope, BHT/BHP predictions
Plug & Abandon (P&A): barrier philosophy for HPHT, cement selection, placement reliability, verification
Well control: kick detection in HPHT, influx characterization, MAASP limits, closed-loop operations
Risk assessment: design & operational HAZID/HAZOP, bowtie development, barrier management (LOPA/SIL awareness)Required Skills and Experience:
