Job Description – Head of Design and Engineering


Description

Our client is seeking a visionary and technically accomplished Head of Design and Engineering to lead the full lifecycle of data center infrastructure projects from initial concept and business case development through master planning, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and operational handover.

This leadership role requires a strategic thinker with deep domain expertise in mechanical systems and data center technologies, capable of driving multidisciplinary teams toward innovative, scalable, and resilient solutions.


Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

• Lead and participate in all phases of mechanical design and engineering, including conceptual development, basis of design, scope definition, and iterative documentation.

• Serve as a subject matter expert in advanced cooling methodologies, including hybrid and liquid cooling systems, ensuring optimal thermal performance and energy efficiency.

• Drive project-level tasks and milestones in coordination with the project management team, ensuring timely and high-quality deliverables.

• Create and review mechanical design content, specifications, and technical documentation to ensure alignment with project goals and industry standards.

• Conduct technical reviews of submittals, RFIs, and engineering analyses, providing expert guidance and resolution.

• Perform site visits for field investigations, coordination meetings, and design validation.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Technical Leadership

• Lead the design and engineering strategy for all data center projects, ensuring alignment with business goals, operational requirements, and sustainability targets.

• Serve as the technical authority across all engineering disciplines including mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, fire protection, BMS, security, and IT cabling.

• Oversee the development of high-level schematic designs, technical specifications, and design documentation.


Project Execution & Oversight

• Manage design-build contractors and consultants throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring quality, compliance, and timely delivery.

• Drive project milestones in coordination with project management, construction, and operations teams.

• Participate in commissioning and ensure seamless transition to operations.


Design Excellence & Compliance

• Ensure all designs meet applicable codes, standards (ASHRAE, ISO, ANSI, etc.), and client-specific requirements.

• Review and approve engineering submittals, RFIs, and technical studies.

• Lead the development and review of mechanical systems including hybrid and liquid cooling, airflow management, and energy efficiency strategies.


Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Interface with internal stakeholders, clients, and external partners to ensure cohesive project execution.

• Support site due diligence including technical assessments and feasibility studies.

• Collaborate with Site Operations to optimize existing systems and ensure long-term maintainability.


Experience

• Education: Bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, or Building Services from an accredited institution.

• Experience: Minimum 4 years in data center design and construction with 10+ years preferred in engineering leadership roles within mission-critical environments.

• Licensure: Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration strongly preferred.


Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, and design tools such as Revit, Navisworks, and CFD modeling software.
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows and commissioning platforms.

Industry Knowledge:

  • Deep understanding of data center infrastructure including mechanical systems, redundancy topologies, PUE/WUE metrics, and operational sequences.
  • Working knowledge of building codes, fire safety regulations, and LEED/Uptime Institute certification standards.
