Application Engineering Manager
Energy Storage | Utility-Scale BESS

An international clean energy technology organisation is seeking an experienced Application Engineering Manager to lead technical solution development for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Australia and selected international markets.
The Role
You will take ownership of the technical solution strategy across complex RFx and tender submissions, leading system sizing, simulation coordination, and proposal development for large-scale BESS projects. You will also act as a senior technical interface between customers, internal engineering teams, and commercial stakeholders. In this role, you will be expected to travel (mainly domestic) to support customers, site visits, partner engagement, and industry events.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead technical strategy for RFx and tender submissions to maximise bid competitiveness and win rate
• Translate customer requirements into commercially viable BESS solutions aligned with margin and delivery targets
• Define optimal system architecture (DC/AC, PCS, EMS integration) balancing performance, cost, and risk
• Drive system sizing and simulation outputs to support pricing, performance guarantees, and contractual commitments
• Identify technical risks early and implement mitigation strategies to protect project profitability
• Act as senior technical representative in customer negotiations and clarification meetings
• Support commercial teams in positioning differentiated technical value against competitors
• Ensure proposals meet grid integration and compliance requirements to reduce post-award variation risk
• Collaborate with supply chain and engineering teams to optimise cost structures and lead times
• Provide technical input into contract negotiations, performance guarantees, and warranty discussions
• Support bankability conversations with IPPs, EPCs, and financial stakeholders
• Manage and develop a high-performing Application Engineering team aligned to bid timelines and quality standards
• Improve proposal turnaround time and technical documentation quality to accelerate market responsiveness
• Represent the organisation at customer meetings, site visits, and industry events (domestic and at times international travel required)
What We’re Looking For
• 5–10+ years’ experience in BESS, renewable energy, or grid-connected power systems
• Strong hands-on experience with Power Conditioning Systems (PCS) / AC integration (essential)
• Deep understanding of BESS system sizing and hybrid configurations
• Experience supporting utility-scale tenders (50–500+ MWh projects preferred)
• Exposure to PV + BESS and/or Wind + BESS integration advantageous
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Power Systems Engineering
